WHO SSI guidance puts closed drainage workflow back into procurement review

WHO's surgical-site infection guidance gives hospitals a stronger framework for reviewing postoperative workflows. Negative pressure drainage sets should be evaluated by closed connection, scale reading, fixation, sterile packaging and handover records.

WHO's global guidelines for surgical site infection prevention are available here: WHO Global SSI Guidelines. The guidance covers perioperative infection prevention and is not a purchasing manual for drainage products.

Even so, it gives procurement teams a useful lens. A negative pressure drainage set should be assessed inside a closed postoperative drainage workflow: reservoir capacity, scale readability, negative pressure control, connector sealing, tube fixation, sterile packaging and traceable labeling.

Distributors should prepare more than a price list. Hospital review usually needs product photos, packaging photos, specification sheets, connection instructions, sterilization information, lot-trace examples and IFU documents. Registration-file availability should be stated early for target markets.

For procurement teams, the stronger evaluation point is not a single product feature but whether the drainage workflow is documented end to end. Suppliers that can provide specification, connection, sterility, traceability and nursing-handover information are better positioned for hospital review. This article is for procurement-file review and does not replace infection-prevention policy or postoperative nursing procedures.
