Intragastric Balloon

The intragastric balloon is made of medical silicone. It is passed through the mouth in its deflated state under direct gastroscopic vision and then filled with saline. By occupying volume in the stomach, the balloon helps patients feel full sooner and eat less; it is used together with a diet and behavior-modification program. The filling solution is 400–700 ml of 0.9% sodium chloride with about 2 ml of methylene blue, so that if the balloon leaks the patient's urine changes color and the leak can be detected early. The designed indwelling period is 6 months, after which the balloon must be removed endoscopically. Patient selection, clinical use and follow-up are decided by qualified physicians in line with local regulations and the IFU. Each set is supplied sterile for single use and contains the balloon (covered by a thin silicone sheath), catheter, steel guidewire, silicone stylet, syringe and infusion tube. During filling the sheath ruptures by itself to release the balloon, the valve is self-sealing, and pulling the silicone tube detaches the balloon from the catheter.
