Surgeons from Russia visited Xinhua Hospital, Shanghai, to observe robotic bariatric surgery and discuss technique and patient selection case by case.
Surgeons from Russia visited Xinhua Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, this week for a hands-on clinical exchange with the hospital's surgical team. The visit focused on robotic bariatric surgery and on the practical details that shape care before, during and after an operation.

In the operating room
The visiting surgeons observed live robotic bariatric procedures in the OR. Standing alongside the operating team, they followed each step at the robotic system and on the theatre monitors, with the chance to ask questions as the cases progressed.

On the ward
Outside the operating room, the group walked through the perioperative pathway on the ward. This part of the exchange looked at how patients are prepared for surgery and cared for afterwards, the stages that sit around the operation itself and matter just as much to the patient's experience.

Case-by-case discussion
Throughout the visit, the surgeons discussed technique and patient selection case by case. Talking through individual cases allowed both teams to compare how they approach similar clinical situations, what they look for when deciding whether a patient is suitable for a procedure, and how they handle the technical steps.

Why exchanges like this matter
Exchanges like this are how good practice travels: surgeons from different healthcare systems sharing what works, and what they would do differently. Direct observation in the operating room and open discussion of real cases give visiting surgeons a view of everyday practice that is difficult to gain from papers or conference talks alone.
At Shenyun Medical, we support the bariatric and metabolic surgery community and value opportunities for surgeons to learn from one another. We thank every surgeon and team member at Xinhua Hospital who made this exchange possible, and the visiting surgeons from Russia for the open and practical discussions.
